Merchants' Exchange

Documentation, analysis, and pilot treatments led to the development of a comprehensive conservation program for the exterior stone masonry of the the Philadelphia Merchant's Exchange.

 

Through a cooperative agreement with the National Park Service, the Architectural Conservation Laboratory undertook a pilot conservation program for the exterior masonry of William Strickland's Merchants' Exchange Building in Philadelphia. The first phase of the project focused on the survey and analysis of stone conditions, while in the second phase the intricately carved Carrara marble capitals were analyzed and one capital was fully treated as a mock-up for future conservation efforts.
