Over a decade of study has revealed the capitals to be in an elevated state of deterioration. Factors such as atmospheric pollution, moisture cycling, and thermal expansion/contraction have all contributed to the severe degradation of the carved stone capitals, compromising their stability and appearance. Pervasive deterioration mechanisms include erosion, loss, spalling, widespread cracking and disaggregation, and especially surface soiling and gypsum encrustation. Effects from pollution and weathering are particularly evident on the east façade. A diagnostic investigation of the type, degree and complexity of deterioration affecting the capitals revealed the importance of detailed analysis in determining the best methods for conservation.
