The decision to use ArcView GIS software as the primary method for digitization of the conditions survey and treatments allowed the data to be used for an unprecedented degree of analysis that would have been impossible using standard CAD drawings. This allowed for an in-depth study of the stone's past and present performance and deterioration and correlations between conditions and location to identify patterns of deterioration over time. These methods could also help predict where future deterioration might occur. Adapting software designed for the mapping of geographic relationships to the mapping of surface conditions allowed for a better understanding of the mechanisms at work and expanded the array tools available for future projects.
