TA primary objective of Phase I is to assemble
all
existing archival resources for the purposes of creating a history of
past ‘stabilization’ work which pertains to the preservation of the
standing architectural resources; this includes combining new and
existing documentation of the site’s walls and features, and areas of
specific interest including past treatments, areas of severe
deterioration, and areas that will require special attention.
The
deliverable at the present is an up-to-date Conservation History
Database, a powerful resource which cultural resource managers can use
to query past conservation documents and photographs for a wide range
of applications. An updated room history report will be generated for
the Historic Preservation Guide in Phase III from the database.
Available
documentation from the park archive was collected and digitized during
the Summer 2018 field visit; these include: maintenance records; field
notes and photographs from excavation and stabilization work;
investigative reports relating to architectural and archaeological
resources; material analyses performed by contractors; and other
related memoranda. The sources collected consist of both scans of
original reports and digital files. Hard reports were obtained from the
cultural resource offices at the Forked Lightning Ranch and collections
at the park archives. In all, approximately 11,000 files were collected
and reviewed.
During Winter 2018 and Spring 2019, these
documents were organized and parsed for conservation and stabilization
references with the intent to create a conservation database which
organizes key information from archival documents and historic
photographs. Due to the substantial amount of documentation, only
written references were inputted into the database; historic and
stabilization photos will be inputted during Phase II (2019/2020). The
database offers the ability to both sort information chronologically
and create custom searches based on date, location, keyword, and
conservation method.
